3. We shall honor and respect the diverse backgrounds of our colleagues including such diverse characteristics as sexual orientation, race, national origin, religious beliefs, or other affiliations.
Many of my coworkers come from diverse cultural backgrounds. It is important to respect their culture and realize we are all here for the same reason. We want to make a difference in the lives of the families and children we work with. I believe working in diverse conditions gives you more knowledge and understanding of many issues concerning children and families.

3.We shall recognize and respect the dignity, diversity, and autonomy of the families and children
we serve.
I believe this statement is very important related to the work I do. When working with families you must give them respect and realize every family has different values, cultural backgrounds, and lifestyle choices. We are there to give them support and resources, not to judge.

P-1.1—Above all, we shall not harm children. We shall
not participate in practices that are emotionally
damaging, physically harmful, disrespectful, degrading,
dangerous, exploitative, or intimidating to
children. This principle has precedence over all
others in this Code.
Every professional in the Educational field should read this statement. We are here to help nurture children and give them resources to help them grow. Even the words we use need to follow this code. Positive words and praise are essential to foster a healthy learning enviornment.
Hi Alissa,
ReplyDeleteYour first comment about honoring the diversity of those we work with is so true. I think when acknowledge that we are all here for the same reason, just as you said, we are then able to learn from each others unique contributions and use what we learn to support the students together.
I like the last comment about doing no harm to children. Some children come to us having known nothing but harm, and to know we can give show them kindness, love and respect is not only good for them, but is so very rewarding for us, as well.
I think the ideal about not harming children is very important to professionals in this field. Children look to their teachers as support, not as someone who would harm them. As professionals we need to be there for the children 100% emotionally, socially and physically.
ReplyDeleteAlissa,
ReplyDeleteWhat a profound statement you made, "not to judge". How easy to fall into that trap, yet how damaging to those being judged. It's good that you are aware of the effect words have on children. Children respond so much better to praise. Great blog!

Your last statement says so much Alissa. Not harming children is the most important concern in my book. It's not just about harming physically, the emotional damage and mental damage plays a part as well. No one is greater than the other. Harm is harm. We as an ECE family have to work together to minimize such acts and continue thriving for enlightening factors of the field.
ReplyDeleteHi Alissa,
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed reading your blog. I really liked reading your post about your mom and she looks very pretty in the photo. I know you miss her very much. Thank you for sharing your posts about all that is important to you --in your family and in your career. I wish you the best as you continue in this program.
